BIOGRAPHY

A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris , Liliane Phung immediately made her mark with her remarkably unique work. Spotted early on by Hervé Chandès, she participated in the exhibition "J'en rêve" at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in 2005, under the patronage of Jean-Michel Alberola. On this occasion, the Foundation acquired four of her paintings, marking the beginning of a promising career, already supported by the attention of institutions.

Liliane Phung's practice is distinguished by a figurative painting interwoven with temporal layers and stylistic references, where the decor, clothing, hairstyles, and objects form a coded visual language. Through these elements, she composes a disturbing proto-era, both melancholic and fictional, where past and present intertwine. Her figures—often female, seen from behind or in mirrors—evok Degas and Lautrec as much as the troubled heroines of De Palma or Hitchcock's cinema.

The mirror, the hairstyle, and the makeup become rituals of metamorphosis, replayed on canvas after canvas. Through her compositions, Phung invites the viewer to step through the looking glass, an introspective journey where the boundaries between past and present, real and imaginary, blur.

Since her first solo exhibition, "The Licking That Doesn't Hurt" (Allsopp Contemporary, London, 2008), Phung's works have entered important private and institutional collections ( David Roberts Arts Foundation, Bob Calle, Béatrice Lanson-Villat , etc.). Her painting oscillates between intimacy and Zeitgeist, between cultural archetypes and personal obsessions, often nourished by photo-novels, old posters, outdated objects that she collects.

A multifaceted artist, Phung integrated performance and music into her artistic approach at an early age. She is a singer and performer in the group Dixlexsix, alongside DJs and conceptual artists such as Simon Bernheim and Jess Bernard. This collaboration gave rise to an album produced by Cosmo Vitelli (I'm A Cliché) and a series of concerts in France and Europe, notably at the Centre Pompidou, the Zénith (opening act for The Gossip), and the Halles de Schaerbeek.

In April 2023, Galerie Nosco (Brussels) presents a group exhibition on femininity in resistance, bringing together international artists including Louise Fishman, Lauren Seiden, Aria XYX, and Paula Cortazar. Phung has been invited to exhibit, confirming her place in an artistic landscape in search of alternative, sensitive, and deeply embodied narratives.

Phung's work has been featured in major institutions and exhibitions, cementing her reputation on the international art scene. Her multicultural perspective and unique style make a significant contribution to contemporary art, offering a profound reflection on the condition of women through the prism of her personal experiences.
