About the work
Royalty adopts the solemn codes of the monarchical portrait: hieratic posture, controlled symmetry, measured lighting. At first glance, the scene might evoke a royal couple frozen in tradition. But Kierans shifts the frame. The coronation doesn't take place in a palace, but at an end-of-year ball. Behind the pageantry, an adolescent hierarchy emerges, made of romantic dreams and glittering cardboard crowns. The painting reveals the collective mechanics of fantasy while highlighting its artifice, with hushed precision and subtle irony.
