About the series

Gérald Schmite draws freely from the iconographic repertoire of classical painting and sculpture, the better to subvert its conventions. Both heirs to ancient art and fiercely dissident, his ceramics combine heterogeneous aesthetics that challenge their distant models. The telescoping of references produces disconcerting cohabitations where Hermès rubs shoulders with Louis XVI without hierarchy. Deep blues, acid greens, and dizzying reds give an insolent luster to his timeless earthenware. Each piece draws a baroque world that exaggerates and overflows, where beauty constantly meets strangeness and mischief.

He is undoubtedly, along with Louis XIV, the favorite king of the French. He converted to the Catholic religion and then put an end to the Wars of Religion with the Edict of Nantes in 1598. A bon vivant, a shrewd warlord, a bold cavalier, and an inveterate fornicator, he has countless mistresses. Beautiful or ugly, Marquises or ribalds, he wants them all. Not too many, this time... he will hold the candle.
— Gérald Schmite

About

GERALD SCHMITE

Gérald Schmite cultivates a practice where art history meets a sharp visual culture. His contemporary baroque faience pieces play with classical codes only to subvert them, moving freely between reverence and irreverence. Some are dressed in bold hues — deep blues, acid greens, vertiginous reds — while others embrace a pure white or radical monochrome, letting form speak for itself. This singular aesthetic has captivated collectors, where Hermès and Louis XVI collide in an encounter as elegant as it is unexpected.
