About the series
Gérald Schmite draws freely from the iconographic repertoire of classical painting and sculpture, the better to subvert its conventions. Both heirs to ancient art and fiercely dissident, his ceramics combine heterogeneous aesthetics that challenge their distant models. The telescoping of references produces disconcerting cohabitations where Hermès rubs shoulders with Louis XVI without hierarchy. Deep blues, acid greens, and dizzying reds give an insolent luster to his timeless earthenware. Each piece draws a baroque world that exaggerates and overflows, where beauty constantly meets strangeness and mischief.
“
In the series of imaginary vases, Ottaviano is a three-dimensional sketch.
Improvised, it seems to have come straight from memory. A hybrid object, it evokes antiquity, the Renaissance and the Baroque; it never existed.
It’s a pencil stroke. Imperfect, unfinished, like a fragment of History. ”
