About the series

Gérald Schmite freely draws inspiration from the iconographic repertoire of classical painting and sculpture to subvert their conventions. Both heirs to ancient art and fiercely dissident, his ceramics aggregate heterogeneous aesthetics that challenge their distant models. The telescoping of references produces unsettling cohabitations where Hermes coexists with Louis XVI without hierarchy. Deep blues, acidic greens, and dizzying reds lend an insolent luster to his timeless faience pieces. Each piece creates a baroque world that exaggerates and overflows, where beauty constantly meets strangeness and playfulness.

In the series of imaginary vases, Ottaviano is a sketch in volume.
Improvised, it seems to emerge from memory. A hybrid object, it evokes antiquity, the Renaissance, and the Baroque; it never existed.
It’s like a pencil stroke. Imperfect, unfinished, like a fragment of history.

— Gérald Schmite

About

GERALD SCHMITE

Gérald Schmite cultivates a practice where art history meets a sharp visual culture. His contemporary baroque faience pieces play with classical codes only to subvert them, moving freely between reverence and irreverence. Some are dressed in bold hues — deep blues, acid greens, vertiginous reds — while others embrace a pure white or radical monochrome, letting form speak for itself. This singular aesthetic has captivated collectors, where Hermès and Louis XVI collide in an encounter as elegant as it is unexpected.
